Environmental Care Group [ECG] was established to create awareness on environmental care and to offer solution based programs to maintain a healthy environment and make the Earth a better place to live.

 The Demanding Background

The shocking factors listed below explains the need for this group.

* Human activities have led to large increases in heat-trapping gases over the past century. The    global warming of the past 50 years is due primarily to this human-induced increase. Global    average temperature and sea level have increased, and precipitation patterns have changed.

* Only 0.6% of all plastic bags are recycled thus leading to massive environmental issues    (Worldwatch Institute 2004 report).

* Over 1m birds and sea creatures die each year from entanglement or consumption of    plastic.Plastic bags are not the only culprit but also plastic bottles, caps, and other containers    discarded (IWMA).

* Over 86% of all ocean waste collected is plastic (IWMA).

* Studies on 600 fulmar birds found 95% of them had plastic bags in their stomachs (Save the    North Sea Project)

* Plastic takes over 500 years to photodegrade (degrade via use of sunlight) into small plastic    polymers. Biodegradable bags take 1 -4 months

* Every day 50 to 100 species of plants and animals become extinct as their habitat and human    influences destroy them.

* Americans use 50 million tons of paper annually -- consuming more than 850 million trees.

  Major objectives

# To Plant Trees.

# To organize meet with Government, Pollution Control Board and ask them to take an action on     this.

# To Create awareness against the use of POLYBAGS and encouraging the use of BYOB.

 Our Achievements

* In these three years we Planted around 6,000 saplings around Chennai.

* On 26th April 2009 we conducted shop to shop awareness campaign explaining people about    hazards of plastics and its implications at Tyagaraya Road.
* Taken forward the cause of making Chennai a greener arena to thrive in by launching our    successfully on going “SMS –A-SAPLING “project which is definitely one of its kinds.
* Have distributed around 6000+ saplings in and around the city and the figure is still on rise.
* Volunteered the MYLAPORE FESTIVAL in association with the Sundaram Finance, where in we    distributed free CLOTH BAGS, and imparted the fatalities caused by the usage of polybags.
* Tie up with the PSBB School and helped in catching the young minds in stream lining the care for    nature process.
* COPENHAGEN world conference -human chain formation on GLOBAL WARMING DAY to create    awareness about the ongoing climate change summit which will be the most important climate    conference ever.

 Proposed Projects

* Ban the usage of plastics in and around Chennai

* Implement effective waste management system

* Present cloth/jute/fun bags as gifts and ask them to use those for shopping
